The Vessel That Steered The Sea
Jaiden Hordosillo
When you first meet…
Honey dawns turn
to auburn dusks
glimmering
across the
sapphire
glass.
You can’t stop the
sea of
texting,
learning,
talking,
listening.
Then.
All tides
turn from
low to loving.
1
Then.
You set sail,
on a ship named
Sympathy.
And every day
is a new
journey.
Then.
Conversations
convert
from
confessing
to
concealing.
Confiding,
no longer,
the instinct
is hiding.
With so much peace,
you swore
the vessel steered the sea.
2
So no one sees,
when the tide recedes
and when the skies
shift to ebony.
Then.
The waves weave
into chop that can stop
even the strongest ship.
Reactions turn to replies.
Seduction to silence.
Then.
Within the storm siege,
the sea swallows,
and
the ship named
Sympathy
sinks.
Suddenly
you’re both
lost to sea.
3
Left to float,
waiting
for a new boat,
while you search
for the signs of the storm
you didn’t see,
arrogantly,
thinking,
“where did it come from?”
Never realizing,
every silence,
willed
the storm
to be.
